Set in the 1870s during the Meiji Restoration, the film follows Nathan Algren, a disillusioned American Civil War veteran haunted by his past. He is hired by the Japanese government to modernize their military and suppress a rebellion led by traditionalist samurai. After being captured by the rebels, Algren becomes immersed in their culture, eventually embracing the "Bushido" code.
