The camera was fixed, positioned at a low angle in a room Elias recognized instantly. It was his own living room, seen from the corner behind the bookshelf. But the furniture was gone. The walls were stripped to the studs.

Suddenly, the figure turned. It had no face, only a smooth, reflective surface where features should be. Elias saw his own reflection in that digital mask—not the Elias sitting at the desk now, but an Elias from years ago, younger and unburdened.

The video didn’t open in a standard media player. Instead, the entire screen bled into a grainy, high-contrast black and white. There was no sound at first—just the heavy, rhythmic thrum of what sounded like a mechanical heart.

A text box flickered onto the screen, overlaying the video: “The backup is complete.”

The video ended. The screen went black. In the reflection of his monitor, Elias saw the tall, draped figure standing right behind his chair.

Elias reached for the power button, but his fingers went numb. He looked down and saw his hands were beginning to pixelate, turning into the same grainy, high-contrast grey as the video.

In the center of the empty room stood a figure. It was tall, draped in a heavy, light-absorbing fabric that made it look like a hole cut out of reality. The figure didn't move, but the timestamp at the bottom of the video was accelerating—seconds turning into hours in the blink of an eye.

The "heartbeat" sound spiked, becoming a deafening screech of static. The figure raised a hand and pointed directly at the camera.
