By the 1920s, Lionel trains were the standard of the world. But the Great Depression hit, and the luxurious, expensive trains became hard to sell.

After suspending production during WWII to make compasses for the Navy, Lionel came back with a vengeance in 1946. They unveiled trains with real puffing smoke—achieved through a tablet that often dissolved into a hot, corrosive liquid, a challenge the engineers quickly fixed.
