The story follows Mike Shea (Timothy Hutton), a young man who dies while performing a heroic rescue. Upon arriving in Heaven , he meets and falls in love with Annie Packert (Kelly McGillis), a "new soul" who has never lived on Earth. Their romance is cut short when Annie is sent to Earth to be born. Desperate to be with her, Mike makes a deal to return to Earth as a new person, but there is a catch: he will have no memory of her, and he only has 30 years to find her and win her back.
