For years, she endured his outbursts and infidelity with a calm, prayerful disposition, eventually leading both her husband and her mother-in-law to the Christian faith. However, her greatest challenge was her eldest son, Augustine. A brilliant but rebellious young man, Augustine rejected his mother’s values, choosing instead a life of hedonism and joining the Manichaean heresy.

Rather than giving up on him, Monica followed Augustine across the sea to Rome and later to Milan. She famously sought the counsel of a bishop who, seeing her tears, told her, "It is impossible that the son of so many tears should perish." Her persistence was finally rewarded in Milan, where Augustine met St. Ambrose and underwent a profound spiritual transformation. Shortly before her death in 387 AD, she told her son that her purpose in life had been fulfilled now that she had seen him become a "servant of God." However, her greatest challenge was her eldest son,
