The song was famously written and co-composed by legendary French singer (known as "The Little Sparrow") in 1945. : Piaf originally wrote the line as "j'vois des trucs en rose" (I see things in pink). Her friend Marianne Michel suggested changing it to the more conventional "la vie en rose," creating the classic we know today.

: When Piaf first proposed the song to her frequent collaborator Marguerite Monnot, it was rejected as "foolishness". Eventually, musician Louiguy accepted authorship of the music.
